9 wives tales on how to predict your baby’s sex

Clever scientists and technology have made it pretty easy to figure out whether you’re having a boy or girl. You should be able to know, by about 20 weeks when you go for your first ultra sound if the baby genitals are view-able.

Genetic testing is the only way to be 100% sure, though it is only offered to couples considered to be at high risk of having a baby with a genetic abnormality
Before these high tech gadgets were available, people had to rely on guesses to figure out the sex of the baby. There’s a 50 % chance of getting it right but these ways to tell have been passed down from generation to generation. You may have already heard them or if you’re pregnant had some older women come up and tell you the sex of your baby. These predictions aren’t scientific but they are fun.

#1 The linea nigra
This is a dark line that appears on your bump. Apparently if the line goes all the way up and above your belly button you’re having a boy. If it reaches just below the belly button, it’s a girl.

#2 Carrying low or high

Legend has it that of the bump is high, you’re carrying a girl, a low bump and be prepared for a boy

You won’t get through your pregnancy without hearing this one and will probably be sick of hearing it by the time your due. Legend has it that of the bump is high, you’re carrying a girl, a low bump and be prepared for a boy

#3 Your skin

Carrying a boy is said to wreak havoc on your skin while carrying a girl, expect silky smooth skin

#4 Heart rate

Apparently girls have a faster heart rate than boys. Above 14obpm and you’re going to have a girl, lower than 140bpm and its definitely a boy. Exactly at 140bpm, you just may have a puppy, who knows!

#5 The truth is in the hair

Has it become hard to walk down the street without being stopped by a modeling scout on account of your luxurious locks? You’re having a boy.

Dull limp hair that’s falling off and you’ve got a girl bun in the oven. Has it become hard to walk down the street without being stopped by a modeling scout on account of your luxurious locks? You’re having a boy.

Hair in this case means body hair as well. It will grow thick and fast when you’re about to have a boy but if your hair growth remains normal, it’s a girl

#6 Weight

According to an old wives tale, if your extra weight is at the front, it’s a boy. If you’re carrying the weight all over and look round, it’s a girl.

#7 Taste

Think sugar and spice. Common sense dictates that if your cravings are sweet, you are carrying a girl. On the other hand, if your prefer sour foods to chocolate desserts, it’s a boy

#8 Having A Barf

If you were wondering what good could possibly come from all-the-time sickness

If you were wondering what good could possibly come from all-the-time sickness (calling it ‘morning’ sickness is clearly an issue for Trading Standards), here it is. It’s a way of predicting the sex of your unborn child. If you had your head in the toilet bowl for the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy, you’re having a girl. If you escaped without that daily vom, legend predicts you will have a baby boy.

#9 The glow

Old wives say that it’s possible to predict your baby’s sex by looking at the mother. If the mother is beautiful and blooming while knocked up, it’s a boy. If you’re looking tired and haggard and every one is asking if you’re doing okay, it’s a girl.

One of the more ridiculous tales is that the direction your pillow faces can be used to predict the sex of your developing baby. If your pillow faces north, it’s a boy. If it faces south, it’s a girl. If it points east or west, the test is inconclusive. Please try again later (once you’ve rearranged your room to give you the answer you most want).

So now you know but before you start stopping every stranger on the street and going” Oooh, I think it’s a boy because you have a beard,” or “You look terrible, you must be having a girl.” Remember, you have a 50% chance of getting it right, anyway.
