If you’re worried about the pain you may experience during labor, we suggest HypnoBirthing as an excellent option for getting through labor with less pain and more ease.
First, let’s start off with the basics…
Table of Contents
What is HypnoBirthing?
HypnoBirthing (also called Childbirth Hypnosis and The Mongan Method) is a calm, relaxing, totally safe way to prepare you for labor. This method can be used in any environment you desire. Whether you give birth at home, in a hospital, or anywhere in between HypnoBirthing can help ease your fears and, hopefully, the pain of labor!
This approach to labor prepares you both physically and mentally and, sadly, too few women realize that while birthing is natural, it takes preparation like any other intense, physical, and emotional undertaking.
Plus, the benefits are not limited to you alone. HypnoBirthing takes your partner into consideration, as well as the health and wellbeing of your child.
Benefits of Hypnobirthing
- You will learn to reach deep levels of relaxation to eliminate the fear that causes tension and pain.
- It significantly reduces and often eliminates the need for chemical painkillers and drugs.
- It helps shorten the first phase of labor.
- Through the process, you will feel more alert, fresh, awake, and energized.
- The breathing techniques keep oxygen supplied to your baby during birthing.
- It will empower you and your partner to achieve a gentle and calm birth.
- It also gives your birthing companion an active role in the process.
- You will experience less or no fatigue during labor.
- You will learn to embrace the concept of pre-birth parenting.
HypnoBirthing uses breathing exercises, meditation, visualization, relaxation, detail to nutrition, and positive toning of the body to help make labor and delivery easier.
Just a few of the many techniques used in Hypnobirthing are – positions used during labor and birth, self-hypnosis, how to quickly get into a deep relaxation mindset, and how to breathe correctly and efficiently. All of these things help you ease the pain of your contractions.
Keep in mind – even with Hypnobirthing labor and delivery can still be painful. This is simply a way to actively control your stress and adrenaline levels so that birth is easier. The process also aides in the release of the endorphins such as oxytocin (also known as the “Love Hormone”).
Oxytocin is crucial to a smooth birth (and here’s why!). Taking steps towards aiding the release of oxytocin during birth can only help make labor easier. However, this program is not a magic pill to stop the overall pain completely.

There are several Hypnobirthing books to help guide you. A great and highly recommended book for the subject is [easyazon_link identifier=”0757318371″ locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”bbpreping-20″ popups=”n”]Hypnobirthing: The Natural Approach to Safer, Easier, More Comfortable Birthing – The Mongan Method[/easyazon_link]. However, there are several others out there that are very informative on the subject. This is just the most recommended.
“HypnoBirthing [is] a trademarked curriculum that trains expectant moms in visualization, relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques, which are then used instead of drugs. Some studies indicate that hypnosis can cut down on pain and complications and possibly even shorten labor…” // Newsweek
Here’s what the author has to say about childbirth, which we wish every pregnant woman knew!
“Childbirth is not something to be feared; it is a natural expression of life. With HypnoBirthing, your pregnancy and childbirth will become the gentle, life-affirming process it was meant to be.” // [easyazon_link identifier=”0757318371″ locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”bbpreping-20″ popups=”n”]Amazon.com[/easyazon_link]
Not much of a reader? That’s alright! Most likely your local hospital will have a HypnoBirthing class. If not, just check out the HypnoBirthing website. Classes are ideal if you learn better face-to-face and in groups. You can communicate with other moms (or moms-to-be) and share experiences, as well as fears and solutions to them! It’s a great way to feel empowered in your pregnancy!
If you don’t have time for classes or reading (or maybe just don’t like them), fear not! You can get [easyazon_link identifier=”B00IDQ3M4E” locale=”US” nw=”y” nf=”y” tag=”bbpreping-20″ popups=”n”]HypnoBirthing CDs[/easyazon_link]! This is a great option for you if you are always on the go or you already have children and find it hard to sit down and relax. You can listen to this in the car, or while waiting in the lobby for your OBGYN appointment. Our recommendation is the Hypnobirthing, Home Study Course. This CD is part one of four. It covers Pregnancy Relaxation and Health, Quick Relaxation and Baby Bonding, and Pregnancy Affirmations.
Okay, let’s say you’re in the hospital (or wherever you plan to give birth) and you forgot to bring your CD! You really want something to listen to and help you through the labor process, but there isn’t enough time to rush home! Well, who doesn’t always have their phone on them in this day and age? If you have an iPhone, you can download the app and be at ease! It is made by Mindfi. Mindfi is a company who is currently focusing on mindfulness and personal wellness. It is clear their goal is to ensure you are as comfortable as you can be.
HypnoBirthing vs. Hypnobabies
If you have done some research on the subject, you will notice “HypnoBabies” is occasionally mentioned. This may seem like just another name for HypnoBirthing, but it’s not! While The Mongan Method is more about staying calm and relaxed, Hypnobabies is more about “mind over matter.”
With Hypnobabies you are taught a method of “if I believe it will be painless, it will be painless.” It also involves a lot of visualization. One example is picturing your body and sending positive waves through it. Hypnobabies t is definitely not as popular as HypnoBirthing, yet several reviews say that it worked for them!
Just find what works for you, Momma!
Reviews for HypnoBirthing have been extremely positive. Every mother that has tried it is raving on about how wonderful the experience was. We’re sure you can agree the idea of feeling more in control, as well as healthy, in a relaxed environment will make your labor ten times better!
Most mothers even choose not to have medication administered while HypnoBirthing because they realize they don’t need it!
That means less pain, and you won’t have to be putting any medicine into your body. Of course, the decision is yours, Momma. Nobody will judge you if you decide to still take medicine during the process. Every pregnancy, as well as every labor and every Momma, is different.
“I could hear everything and respond when I needed to, but I was so relaxed that I remember falling asleep between contractions…”- Anna Wall told WebMD (http://www.webmd.com/baby/features/hypnobirthing-calmer-natural-childbirth#1)
Your partner’s role
As mentioned before, Hypnobirthing is not only for you. It’s for your partner, too! Just having them nearby and there to help you throughout the process is a huge benefit. They can provide so much comfort! Your partner is encouraged to take every class with you. Every step you take along the way, they should be there! With Hypnobirthing your partner will know how to help you stay calm, understand what you’re going through, and know how to be as supportive as possible.
Just listen to this story!
“My wife and I recently had our first baby. May 18, 2013. I couldn’t imagine going through the whole process without everything we learned in Care’s hypnobirthing class. As a dad to be it is nearly impossible not to feel like an outsider through your wife or partners pregnancy. Through our class we learned that we (dads) are a huge part in keeping our wife or partner calm and focused during labor. And the months leading up to labor. Care will teach you how to be the support crew for your wife or partner.
After taking the class we hired Care to be our Doula. Our baby didn’t get the memo that her time in utero was up. She was not coming out….. Our birth did not go as we hoped but thankfully Care was there to keep us focused as a team. I think every husband should insist on a Doula. Care will be at our next birth no matter where we live. She is awesome, informed, and supportive. Five stars are not enough…” – Mark B. says on Yelp!
In conclusion, the answer is yes! Hypnobirthing can make a tremendous difference in the process of labor. Instead of feeling uncomfortable and in constant pain, you could feel almost rejuvenated. You very well should be, too. You are bringing a beautiful life into this world!
We all know birth can be hard. What many women don’t know is how strong they are, and how capable they are of having the kind of birth they want with just a little bit of preparation.
That’s why this method is so effective. It empowers you, Momma, to take real, proven steps towards labor and delivery you can be proud of!
Good luck, and congratulations on your pregnancy!
